Sample Tarot Readings
Tarot relies heavily on symbols and the previously assigned meanings of individual cards. However, your intuition will come strongly into play also. The easiest way to learn the card meanings is to memorize them, and then keep using them daily so the symbols will remain fresh in your memory.
As you get more familiar with your deck and do many readings, you will notice that your intuition speaks to you. You will have a feeling that a certain card reveals something other than what the "known" meaning typically is. You may also notice relationships between certain cards, which give them a new meaning when combined. You can foster this by paying attention to your inner sense as you look at the cards in a spread. Do any jump out at you? Do two or more cards seem to have a connection with each other? (see below for readings that demonstrate these techniques.)
Intuitive Tarot Readings
Here is a short reading I did for myself:
Question: Am I on the right career path at this stage of my life?
Past: The Sun, reversed. Lack of accomplishment and success, blockages, struggles. Present: Five of Pentacles, reversed. Emptiness, financial lack, lack of positive results. Future: Ace of Pentacles. Perfect combination of spiritual and material riches. Success and bliss.
Summary: Using placements for Past, Present and Future together can help give me perspective about my career, comparing where I was, where I am now, and where I'd like to be. According to this reading, the Past and Present have involved a lot of obstacles and struggles (very true), but the near future (usually the next three to six months) indicate much success. According to the cards, I would say the answer is yes, I am on the right career path at this stage of my life, even though I'm still not seeing the progress I'd like to. Even though the first two cards indicate negative situations, the Future card indicates that it WILL eventually lead to success.

Reading for celebrity Jennifer Anniston:
Since Brad Pitt now has a new woman in his life, I thoguht it might be fun to see what's in the cards for Jennifer's love life. ;-) (Reading done on 04/30/05)
Question: Will Jennifer Anniston find a new love anytime soon?
Present: Five of Cups, reversed. Partial loss, losing something now in order to gain something in the future. According to this card, I would say she feels sad about the breakup of her marriage, understandably. But she also feels that it was time to move on, time to let go of what was no longer serving her. Such a process is painful, but sometimes necessary.
Distant Past: The Lovers. No big surprise here, this card indicates a very deep love relationship, partnership, soulmate union. (Distant past usually refers to a few years ago, so this seems to point to her marriage.)
Recent Past: Page of Cups. This card indicates someone who is looking at life anew, thinking about exploring new pathways and opportunities, perhaps embarking on a new path of learning. Certainly she is embarking on a new phase of her life.
Ultimate Goal: Queen of Staffs. Gracious, beautiful, kind, generous woman. Can also indicate a maternal person, so it's possible this card indicates her desire to be a mother. But also to remain true to herself and keep her own identity as a woman, regardless whether she's single or married.
Secret Hopes & Fears: Eight of Cups, reversed. Abandoning dreams and heart's desires. I think her greatest fear is giving up on what she truly wants in life (especially where relationships are concerned, since that's what the reading is about). What she once thought would last forever, did not, which is making her question herself.
Future Influences: Eight of Swords, reversed. Feeling trapped by circumstances, not able to see a way out, feeling confused and disoriented. (This card indicates the circumstances most likely to face her in the next few months.)
Immediate Obstacles: Six of Pentacles, reversed. Clinging in fear, not letting go, not trusting, having no faith. I felt this card referred most strongly to being able to fully let go of her relationship with Brad, as well as being able to trust and fall in love again. I think it will be a challenge for her to release that fear and fully move on.
Forces For or Against Her: Temperance. This card means patience, balance, acceptance. This is a definite force "for her," not against her. I think it speaks about her personality, her ability to bounce back. But it will happen in her own time. She will need to take her time and allow herself to fully heal before moving ahead with a new relationship.
Final Outcome: The Moon. Self-deception, not trusting intuition. My feeling about this card is that she is questioning herself right now, and feeling that her intuition is unreliable (wondering where she went wrong in her marriage, for example). She will need to be careful not to discount her inner knowing with the next man she meets. I also think this because of the last card in the reading:
Life Lesson: Eight of Staffs. This card indicates haste and recklessness, especially where matters of the heart are concerned. The "Life Lesson" card is what she is supposed to be learning through this experience. Combined with the Final Outcome card, I feel that if indeed she does jump into another relationship too soon, it will be a short lived one and cause more heartache. I think it's important for her to pay attention to her inner knowing and not just jump ahead with a relationship because she feels it's expected of her (or because she thinks it will help her heal more quickly).
Do you see how these cards all work together to tell a story? Each individual card can have so many meanings, but combined with all the other cards in the spread, they can have even more possible interpretations. The more readings you do, the better you will get at seeing connections between the cards. Always go with your gut feeling. :-)
