True Ghost Story: Home Sweet Haunted Home
My husband and I also lived in another haunted house from 1999 to 2006. (I seem to have a knack for finding
these places! :-) Or maybe they find me!)
This house was built in 1870. At that time, it was a single-family house, but around 1920 it was converted into
four apartments. I think it's actually gone through a few conversions over the years, back and forth between being
a single-family and apartments. We rented one of the upstairs apartments. Our landlords bought the house about
12 years earlier, shortly after getting married. They tried learning more of the history of the house and the
people who lived there, but they were told by City Hall that there was a big fire in the 1950's, and a lot of
records were destroyed. So not much information is available about the history of the house and its original
owners. There is also a rumor that another house stood on the land before the current house was built, but I don't
know if that's true or not.
My husband and I moved into this apartment in Sept. 99, about a month before we got married. He had been good
friends with the landlords for quite a few years, and he's always wanted to live there. The couple that had been
renting the apartment for the previous 8 years, who also happen to be good friends of my husband, decided to buy a
house. So our landlord offered us the apartment. My husband was thrilled and leaped at the chance, and I was
thrilled too -- although I could have killed him, since it was a month before our wedding and the last thing I
needed at that time was more stress! :-)
My husband had told me that the house was haunted before we moved in, and I was a little skittish about it
- due to my previous experiences with ghosts. A few weeks before our move, the former tenants of the apartment
invited all of us over to their new house for a barbecue, so I got a chance to talk to our new landlords about the
house and the experiences they had there.
Sandra told me that when she and Cal first moved into the house, she often heard music and laughter coming from
the basement, as if a party was going on down there. Knowing she was the only one home, she of course would go to
investigate, but no one would be there when she went downstairs. She said she would hear footsteps moving up and
down the stairs, and through the house, even though she knew she was the only one home, and frequently she would
hear voices and conversations in other areas of the house. Cal said that one day he was in his basement workshop
and someone tapped him on the shoulder. Thinking it was his wife, he turned around, but no one was there. He
checked the whole basement, and he was alone down there.
After hearing their stories, I felt a little better about moving in since it didn't seem to be anything negative.
:-) Interestingly, the former occupants of our apartment never had any strange experiences while living there for
those 8 years. Since we were moving into their apartment, I guess I was half-hoping that since they didn't have any
weird experiences, we wouldn't either. I should have known better!
When Pat and I moved in there, the experiences started almost right away. The day we were moving all our stuff in,
we were putting things up in the attic, and my friend Trina, who was helping us move, suddenly said, "Uh, I have to
get out of here, there's some weird vibes up here . . ." and she ran down the stairs back into our apartment. (The
only attic entrance is in our apartment - so we had exclusive use of the attic for storage) Now, between Trina and
I, *I'm* usually the one that would feel vibes first, so I was really surprised by that! (Plus, I had not mentioned
to Trina that the house was haunted - she's skittish about things like that, so I didn't say a word about it to
her) I followed her downstairs and asked what she meant by "vibes", and she said, "I don't know, but I suddenly
felt like we weren't alone up there. Didn't you feel it? There was someone up there with us, staring at us." I
shook my head - because I really hadn't felt it, which was strange. I did feel a lot of energy up there, but not an
actual presence. Well, anyway, we finished moving in, and got settled.
Shortly after we moved in, one afternoon Pat and I were home alone. We went down into the basement to borrow a
screwdriver from Cal, and while we were down there, we heard small, running footsteps above us, in the foyer. It
sounded like kids running around up there. Cal and Sandra do have two young daughters, but they weren't home. We
thought they had come home while we were downstairs, so we went upstairs, but all was silent. We were still the
only ones home. For the first two months we lived there I wasn't working, so I would often be home alone during the
days while everyone else was at work. During that time, I would frequently hear voices, footsteps and music in
other parts of the house, even though I knew no one else was home.
Pat worked second shift for a time, so I was usually home at night by myself until midnight or so. One
night I was in the bathroom, and I could faintly hear a woman sobbing. They were deep, horrible, gut-wrenching
sobs, and I could hear her murmuring too, but it was too faint for me to make out what she was saying. I wondered
if it was one of my neighbors, but I also had a strange feeling that it wasn't. It was coming from either upstairs
in the attic, or downstairs. I thought it might be Sandra, but that seemed doubtful. The next morning, I got an
email from my neighbor Karen, who rents the apartment across the hall from us with her boyfriend. She said that
very early that morning, she had been awakened by the sounds of a woman or girl screaming "No no no no no no!" very
loudly. She said the screaming was coming from the attic above their apartment! She wanted to know if I had heard
it. I hadn't, but it seemed strange, since I had just heard that woman crying the night before.
We lived in that house for just over 7 years and had a lot of strange happenings, but most of them pretty
subtle. Usually we heard a lot of footsteps, music, and voices. We heard doors opening and closing, and muted
conversations, but usually too quiet to understand what was being said. I heard someone walking around in the
attic above our apartment, even though I know there couldn't have been anyone up there, they would have
had to enter the attic right in our apartment. I also sensed spirits in various parts of the house. In our
apartment I used to sense the presence of a woman, sometimes I would feel her appear behind me as
I worked on the computer, like she was curious about what I was doing. She seemed to be a very light,
friendly type of person, very quiet and subtle, but strong enough so I could sense her there.
There was also a male spirit that I sensed in our neighbor's apartment across the hall, as well as in the
basement. He had a much "colder" feeling, very stern and rigid. I think that in life this wasn't a very nice
man, although not really evil either, just not very loving or kind.
Karen told me that sometimes she felt weird in her bedroom, like she'd like to sleep with the lights on. I think it
was that man she sensed. He had a cold feeling to him, hard to explain. But I don't think he
was dangerous or harmful, just maybe not the nicest guy on the block. One experience seems to validate that:
Karen told me that one day when she was walking through the hallway between their living room and kitchen, she very
clearly heard a man say, "You fat whore!" in an angry tone of voice, right into her ear. Another time, Karen's
boyfriend Rick was in the kitchen, and clearly heard Karen calling him from the living room. When he went in there,
she was sitting there quietly watching TV. She hadn't said a word, and hadn't heard anything herself.
One night I was lying in bed trying to go to sleep. My husband had the television playing loudly in the living room
and it was keeping me awake. Suddenly I felt someone stroke my thigh, a very deliberate touch. Thinking it was my
husband, I turned over and saw that no one was there! My husband was still in the living room, and none of my cats
were in the room with me. I think it was that man I've sensed in my neighbor's apartment. I also sense him watching
me while I'm in the shower sometimes, and there have been a few instances where he's touched me again. Nothing
dramatic, just a firm stroke along my hip or back. Even though it's creepy, I don't think he's harmful. Just a
pervert, LOL. I think he's just trying to let me know he's there, and I also think he has some major issues to work
through! ;-)
I also used to see a cat-spirit upstairs in our attic! One day I was walking up
there to get something, and when I rounded the stairs and headed towards the storage part of the attic, there
was a calico cat lying there sleeping, and she picked up her head to look at me, and then vanished right
before my eyes! Pat said that one night while he was watching TV, he saw a brown cat with a black tail run
across the living room and under the couch. He got down on the floor and looked under the couch, but
there was nothing under there. Once in awhile, I've seen our cats sniffing under the couch and my cedar
chest, as if there's something under there that they're interested in, but whenever I look, there's nothing
there. But Tabby, one of my cats, actually "tip-toes" past that trunk sometimes, as if she's spooked by
something under there.
There was also the spirit of a little girl in that house - and she seemed to be the strongest
presence. I think the running footsteps we heard in the foyer above us that day can be attributed to her.
One night Pat and I were watching TV, and I was also working on the computer. It was getting late, it was
about 1:30 in the morning, and I was getting ready for bed. I walked into the kitchen, heading for our bathroom,
and when I entered the kitchen, I realized how COLD it was in there! It was pretty chilly outside though, and both
windows were open in the kitchen, so I figured that was why. I started walking toward the nearest window to close
it, and I suddenly heard a little girl say, "Mommy?" It was very clear and loud - and it came from right in our
kitchen! I wasn't the only one to hear it either, my youngest cat Lily had followed me into the kitchen, and when I
looked down at her, she had her ears perked up and she was looking all around the kitchen for the source of the
voice.
When I heard that little girl say, "Mommy", for some reason it was right on the tip of my tongue to say, "Yes?",
even though I don't have any kids myself! Goosebumps covered me, and instead of responding, I just closed the
windows, continued to the bathroom and went to bed. But then I started feeling bad about ignoring her. She had
sounded really sad and frightened when she said "Mommy". What if she had been reaching out to me for comfort, and I
just ignored her! I got a sense that this little girl hadn't been very loved while she was alive, and she was lost
and alone now. I thought maybe she was reaching out to me for the love she didn't get while she was alive, and that
once she felt loved and accepted, she would be able to move on. The next day, I went grocery shopping and came
home. I walked into the living room to take off my shoes, and was getting ready to put away the groceries. Suddenly
out of the corner of my eye, I saw a little girl standing by my computer desk. She had brown hair and big, sad
brown eyes. She was just standing there looking at me. I turned my head to get a better look, but she was gone. I
knew it was her though, the girl from the night before.
One day soon after that, I was sitting in the living room working on the computer, when I heard a giggle over by
the TV. I was alone in the apartment; Pat was out working on his car. My head snapped up and looked in that
direction, but I didn't see anything. Then I thought the giggle was possibly on TV, or maybe it was a neighbor
child outside that had giggled. So I muted the TV, and listened. A few seconds later, another giggle, this time
right behind my chair! I whipped around, but of course there was no one there. Then a clock on the shelves above my
head started ticking loudly (you have to understand that we got that clock as a wedding gift, and it stopped
working about a week after we got it. It hadn't ticked at all until this day). I was feeling a little spooked by
all of this, so I got up to get a drink of water, and while I was standing at the kitchen sink, I heard a little
girl say "Whoop whoop dee do!", right behind me. I spun around, but of course, no one was there. I think she might
have sensed that she was scaring me a little, because she stopped after that.
After that her visits were more subtle, but I seemed to sense her the strongest when I was in the
kitchen. Occasionally she would do things to get our attention, like knocking things over or opening the
kitchen drawers. One night Pat and I were sitting in the living room, when we heard an empty soda bottle crash
to the floor in the kitchen. Pat had left it sitting up on the kitchen counter. The cats were all in the
living room with us when this happened, so I think it was her. Another time, I was watching TV, and a card
that my friend Trina had given me jumped up off of the TV and fell to the floor. I saw it happen, it didn't just
fall off, it jumped up and off the TV.
One day Pat and I were in the living room and I went into the kitchen to get us something to drink. I came back
into the living room and was in there for about an hour. When I went back into the kitchen again, all of the
utensil drawers were wide open. Neither Pat nor I had been in the kitchen since I had gone to get us drinks, and
the drawers had been closed at that time.
But even with all of that weird stuff happening, there didn't seem to be anything "negative" there. The cats
LOVED that apartment - especially the places where I seemed to feel the strongest vibes, like the attic. As
soon as I opened that door, they would go flying up there, and stay up there all day if I let them. That made
me feel a lot better, because cats are very psychic creatures. If there was anything to fear there, they would
have let me know that right away. :-)
Update: A few months before we moved out of that house, I thought I was successful in getting the little
girl to move on. I had been working with her, telling her that she is "dead" and that she doesn't have
to stay here and be lonely and scared. I told her that her mother and other family members were waiting for her,
and all she had to do was look for the light. I'd told her many times how beautiful it is "over there", and that
there is nothing to fear. But I kept sensing dread and fear from her whenever I told her that. I felt like she
preferred to stay here with me because she felt comfortable with me. Still, I kept at it whenever she appeared.
Then one night I had a really strong dream about her. I dreamed that I was standing in the kitchen
(which, incidentally, is where I used to sense her presence the strongest) and she kept opening and closing the
cabinets, in an effort to get my attention. Suddenly, she appeared before me. She was beautiful, just glowing with
love, light and happiness. Strangely, she appeared to be older now, around 14 years of age, whereas whenever I
sensed her in our apartment, she seemed much younger, around 5 or 6 years old. In the dream, she beamed a huge
smile at me and said, "Thank you". I could feel so much love coming from her, soaking into my very being. Then she
faded away. I woke up crying tears of happiness, and I felt strongly that she had moved on, and was thanking me for
encouraging her to do so. For the last several months that we lived in that apartment, I didn't sense her there
anymore.
However, a couple weeks after we moved, our former landlord was spending a lot of time in the apartment,
painting and getting it ready to rent to new tenants. And he told me that one night he was up there late
painting and he clearly heard a little girl giggling, laughing and playing. Thinking it was one of his
daughters he went to investigate, but found that both of his girls were sound asleep in bed downstairs! He
couldn't explain who was making those sounds, but he got kind of creeped out being up there by himself...LOL
:-)
Another update: During the last couple of years that we lived there, the male spirit in our
bathroom began to get more and more aggressive with me. Whenever I took a shower I would feel extremely threatened,
like I needed to get out of the room right away. I could actually feel him watching me and he would touch me now
and then, like I described above. It got to the point where I dreaded having to take a shower because I would feel
so vulnerable in there. Finally a friend suggested I ask my angels and guides to accompany me in the shower.
(Sounds funny, but it did work to keep the negativity down somewhat!) But eventually that stopped working too.
Finally I decided to meditate on the situation and see if my guides could tell me more about this man, and how I
could help him. I won't bore you with the details, but my guides let me know that this man needed my help, and he
wasn't as frightening as I feared. He was very angry, and that's why he had such a "dark" countenance. They told me
to talk to him, and get him to move on.
I waited until a day when I was home alone, did a meditation to call in my guides and surrounded myself with
protective light. Then I walked into the bathroom, sat down and started talking to him out loud. I told him that he
didn't have to be afraid, and I wanted to help him. I explained that it was okay to move on into the Light, he
didn't have to be afraid of punishment by God. (I truly think he was hanging back because he was afraid of being
punished for his "sins" in life. He was under the impression that God was some cruel, wrathful Being that would
cast him into Hell. That's just a gut feeling I kept getting from this guy. I sensed he wasn't a very nice person
in life.) Anyway, while I talked to him, I didn't sense him come into the bathroom with me, but I DID sense him on
the other side of the bathroom wall. I heard the floorboards creak over there, as if someone was walking up to the
wall, leaning close and listening. No one was home, so I knew it was him. I kept talking to him for maybe 30
minutes, and nothing dramatic happened.
However, after that day, I didn't sense him around anymore. No creepy feelings in the bathroom,
nothing. I'm pretty sure he moved on, but since I don't live there anymore I can't say for sure.
Final note: I just want to put out a caution about working with spirits in this way. I don't advise
anyone to do this unless you are very sure you know what you're doing. I have had many years of experience
in working with spirits, AND my spirit guides. I was very sure it was safe for me to confront this spirit and talk
to him, otherwise I would not have done it. In addition, I called in my spirit guides and my guardian, Michael the
Archangel, to help me. I was certain I could help this man, because of what my guides showed me.
In a general sense, confronting a spirit and trying to force him or her to leave your home can be a dangerous thing
to do if you are inexperienced, or don't take the proper precautions. So use caution and common sense! If you're
not sure if you can do it, call in someone who can.
