Wiccan Sabbats: Wicca and Witchcraft
Wiccans celebrate eight holidays, called Sabbats. A brief explanation of each follows:
Yule - (winter solstice) approx. December 21 - This is the day when we celebrate the Goddess giving birth to
a son, the God. This is a time of darkness, as it is the shortest day of the year. The God symbolizes the Sun, and
this Sabbat marks the point of the year when the Sun is reborn. The days will soon be getting longer. It is a day
to remember that the ultimate result of death is rebirth.
Candlemas (or Imbolc) February 2 - To celebrate the day when the Goddess has recovered from giving birth to
the God. The earliest awakenings of Spring begin, and seeds begin to sprout within the Earth. The God grows
stronger as the days grow longer. This Sabbat celebrates new life, light, and fertility, and looking ahead to a
bountiful Spring, after a long, cold Winter.
Spring Equinox (or Ostara) approx. March 21 - This is to mark the first true day of Spring. The Earth
(symbolized by the Goddess) is fertile, springing forth with new growth, and the Sun shines brightly, symbolizing
the awakening power and growth of the God.
Beltane - April 30 - This is a time of awakening love and passion between the Goddess and the God. The God
has grown into manhood, and He desires the Goddess. They fall in love, come together, and the Goddess becomes
pregnant by the God. This Sabbat is a celebration of fertility.
Summer Solstice (or Litha) approx. June 21 - This marks the day when nature has reached it's most powerful
time. Abundance of Nature is everywhere, and the fertility of the Goddess (the Earth) is plentiful.
Lammas - August 1 - This symbolizes the first Harvest, when the plantings of Spring are withering and ready
for harvesting. This is a time of sorrow and joy, as the Goddess watches the God weaken as the days grow shorter.
She sees that He is dying, yet still feels joy for the life (His life) within her womb.
Autumn Equinox (or Mabon) approx. September 21 - This is the completion of the Harvest which was begun on
Lammas. The bounty of Nature retreats, and the days grow shorter still, and the God prepares for death. He readies
Himself for the leaving of His physical body, and His journey into the unknown.
Samhain (pronounced Sow-en) October 31 - This is a time to say goodbye to the God, but only temporarily, for
He will be reborn when the Goddess gives birth to Him at Yule. This is also the day when the veil between the
physical and spiritual worlds is the thinnest. It is a time to honor those who have passed on into Spirit. It is a
time of reflection, of looking back over the past year, and coming to terms with, and accepting, death as a part of
life.
These Sabbats are all rich in symbolism, and in summary, you can see that Wiccans are very much connected with the
Earth, the changing of the seasons, and the cycles of life. We honor each phase of Nature, and life.
